Aberfeldy 12

ha! started and only added title!

as i recall, i like it.

see note below on aberlour.

Highland

Mid range single malt with an extremely cool bottle, one of those wide mouth thick neck types. Make you want to do a generous pour!

All round great. Smooth but does have a tiny burn.

I have been going back and forth between adding a dash of water or drinking straight up. This one works both ways.

Its Friday. It's a lockdown. This is a great scotch!

Glen GARIOCH

1797 founders reserve

hmmm... where to start

first up - Liam bought me this on his 19th birthday - yes - witin hours of being 19

funny - they did not ask of ID  - yuk yuk

now. had a sip or two - loved it. especially the finish - BUT - waited until now to have a few and start the blog.

so..... friday - the end of iso9000 audit week - if you are reading this and know what it is - enough said... if not - trust me - time for liquor. passed - excellent in fact. but gawd... boring. killme now. or liquor

off to get my third glass - description to follow

if you are in the liquor store on your phone and do not have time to read the rest of this

GET THIS ONE _ IT IS AWESOME

nose - interesting to start on this for the scotch that has a crazy finish - first snip - gotta say - in balanced fairness - little bit on the rubbing alcohol side - just a smidger though.. i always tell people not to sniff their scotch - nothing good can come of it

my website editor has spell check now.

the bottle talks about the favors, but for me it is really pretty flat, but in a good way. plus the font is really small. squinting...

note that spell check appears to think flaovours is splet flvors

plus splet is plet splet

ya - everything underlined now

sweet vanilla, butterscotch, green fruit

i disagree. after way too much squinting to boot

taste is flat - having a hard time finding the words. not the normal complexity and various tastes to list.

but the finish

THIS SCOTCH HAS A REALLY GREAT FINISH

did i mention the finsih?

wonder if i splet finsih right?

dude at world of whiskey told me to get micheal jackson whiskey book - good call... elevated to "my scotch guy".

meanwhile 3 ofr 3 on jackson's scoring list.. buddy (rip) speaks truth. loed the front part of book too... old school...

and then there is te internet... it is good too...

Habs on TV. Tony just came over. startiong out with Steam Whistle beer.

The Glenrothes. Select Reserve. Speyside signle malt scotch whiskey.

Mather getting enticed over from his bushmills fixation into the land of the nectar...

sharp nose out of the bottle, smooth going down with a long but gentle finish.

habs loose in a shootout. koivu relieved...

now we wait...  mather still sipping and blabbing away... patience...

second glass worth the wait. nice and smooth. gliding down well.

good fights in the canuks flames game. mather liking it. glad he bought it. made him pretty nervous that he would like it - big risk... but he likes it!

definitely a nice scotch. very cool bottle too!

The YAMAZAKI 18

I am working on a chip with a company in the states and a partner in Japan. We had a big meeting this week and the president of the japanese company pulls out a bottle of 18 year old Yamazaki. oooooo.... nice touch dude! nice touch.

I gave him several bows, a hug and the big scow smile.

Michael Collins scores this one 87. He says profound sheery, fresh oranges, growing smoky, citrus, figs, looong finish with smooth oak. Pete coming over to help me crack it. he better hurry. Mather and Jip never got back to me - missss.

light, a bit sweet. can taste the complexity. beautiful colour too - gorgeous orange tinge.

Ogihara-san, you rock!

ah - mather here - all three of us agree that this one is a beauty. nice long finish, very very smooth and enjoyable taste. this soldier is in serious peril of not making it through the night!

Pete: "the nose also contains that nice element of - it was free!", descendants of Normandy must have intermingled Scottish blood!

Mather: there is a lot going on with this stuff (he means the finish).

P.C.: Love the deep amber. Taste is strong and smooth but the best thing is that the finish lasts forever.

T.M.: such a complicated scotch for such a simple man.flavours galore and a great visual right out of the bottle.beautiful colour

Ogihara-san, Ogihara-san,Ogihara-san yessssss.

OK - here we go.

today i worked my ass off, even though i was supposed to take the day off, but either way  - the ting i was supposed to do was come here and work my ass off... its all good.

i just finished dinner - steam and asparagus and it was amazing... polished off half a bottle of chiatni, but stopped so i could switch to scotch.

i stopped at liquor store on way up to cottage and picked what seemed to be the most compllling single malt... bit as i write, i forget the name - i am going to go get it.

McClellands Islay

strange - no year anywhere on the bottle except est 1818

looks gold in the bottle.

strong iodine, although not quite as oppressive as some iodine heavy noses

smooth taste, medium duraition aftertaste, leaves that iodine behind but even more mellow.

overall not shabby at all.

this is gonna be a short one i thingkd

yep - fel;in pretty happy..

a good sipper - not awesone or anything, b ut orkin just fine

it

ok

glengoyne 17

the glengoyne 17 is easily the best liquid on the planet.

its got that iodine taste that is often a problem with scotch and it turns it into the best thing ever.

the nose is fantastic and the tast when you sip it starts off with the medicine flavour, but does not overpwer the way you think it will.

as you swallow, the iodine hits you and sends a warm feeling throughout. feels like drining an furnace.

then, after you thought it could not get any better, you gett he aftertaste. 2 or 3 minutes after the sp, you can sdtill feel the taste and the wareth, way back at the back of the tongue. fantastic.

i polished off a whole bottle pretty quickly by having about four fingers every time i did a midnight flooding of my rink.

macallan 12

when i read the michael jackson book, he constantly raves about macallan and how they stick to old school practices.

specifically, they still use sherry casks for aging even though they are getting hard to come by.

the sherry cask plus a few other old school techniques finsihes up in the macallan 12 being an extremely smooth drink.

has a bit of a stinger on the front of the tongue when you sip it. after taste fades quickly but somehow dramatically.

great anytime scotch.

Highland Park 12

those who know me well will agree that it is not my style to start out negetive... but i do have to admit that the nose on this scotch reminded me of a tequila night in 1986 at a farm, ended up being a it of a problem... still.. there were some good memeories of that night as well.

the iodine in the nose does come across a little funny. put this one down as one the the scotches that you should not sniff beofre you sip or swig.

but swig you can. nice flavour and a stong strong finish. like the finish.

hmmmmmm.... i really am into finishes.

it hs a nice smoky quality, no peat, some other kind of smoke. in the taste but not in the nose - funny.

as i test and write, i have not had anything to eat for some time... feels like a scotch that would be better with a full belly. may have to update pater. or... do 2 beers count?

the Singleton 12

of/de glendullan

really? bilingual scotch label? for france maybe?

nose completely friendly - mellow, no sting whatsoever

really smooth, nicde aftertaste, tiny sting, but not an issue at all

tunring mather onto scotch turns out to have been a great plan!

gonna 100yd and then comment some more

laphroaig 10 year old

islay

you know - if you are not sure, grab this one. it works.

great after food as a finisher, but works as a cocktail too.

been a long week - tired as hell, watching hockey and snacking on cheese and chiabasa

nose is underwhelming, basic scotch, nothing too crazy or especially not overpowering (after 4 my immunity to this has gone up)

taste is relatively simpel too... agian - keep in mind that i just stuffed myself with chiabasa, pepperoni, and a brie bagel sanwich

mmmmm... bagel......

rangers just thumped montreal - hbs and leafs suck... lol... too funny.

mind you, i am against liberal use of the word suck

anyway - finish has a bit of a sting - not enough to suck - wait -

laphroaig

whats with the extra "a" in there? thats too many vowels

finish is solid

overall - great scotch - has everything you expect - nothing overly noteworthy

i suppose i am describing average now - but an average great scotch so... you know... great... get some

Aberlour

so - the problem with this one is that it is nearby and i am having a bit of a bad day.

the bottle is really really cool. wide mouth with thick glass.

the style of bottle goes with teh flavour.

there is something abotu this one that is hard to describe it kinda tastes.. like.. thck?

almost syropy.. that makes no sense.

great nose, great body, great finish.

i ahve been going back and forth between adding a splash of water r not. i am finding that for some scotch, it is better NOT.

this is one - is awesome straight up.

i have been buying aberlour and aberfeldy at the same time for no reason other than the bottles are similar and so are the names.

cant recall if i did a note on aberfeldy yet. will not be tonoght - they do not mix.

aberlour - one of my favorites!

mid-priced too.
